LUDWIG VAN BEETHOVEN (Male, 25-35. Tenor, Bb3-Bb4) A young composer with a chip on his shoulder, determined to make his way in Vienna.
KASPAR VAN BEETHOVEN (Male, 20-35. Tenor, Bb3-Ab4) Ludwig’s sleazy, car-salesman-type brother. Charming and not afraid to scheme Vienna’s rich into buying his brother’s music.
JOSEPHINE BRUNSVIK (Female, 25-45. Mezzo, Db4-Eb5) A widowed Countess frustrated with her life, who begins a secret affair with Ludwig - her piano teacher.
FATHER BEETHOVEN (Male, 40-70. Baritone, C3-A4) Ludwig’s chaotic, alcoholic father who taught him piano and pushes him to make a name for himself.
PRINCE LICHNOWSKY (Male, 30-50. Baritone, F3-Db4) Ludwig’s friend and patron who sponsors his work. Born with a silver spoon in his mouth.
PRINCE LOBKOWITZ (Male, 20-30. Baritone, F3-F4) Another one of Ludwig’s patrons - frenemies with the older Prince Lichnowsky.
KARL VAN BEETHOVEN (Male, 15-25. Tenor, C4-B4) Ludwig’s nephew, whom he adopts to quench his loneliness. Reflecting the angst and nihilism of the 90’s, Karl fights often with his famous, abusive uncle. (PROLOGUE IS SET IN THE FUTURE)

Jess - a sixteen year old girl responsible for caring for her younger brother, Jack. Her mom works all day to support the family and is therefore never present. Jess is weighed down by obligation, finding it very difficult to balance school work on top of everything else.
Bailey - A people-pleasing fifteen year old girl dating Ryan, a boy in her grade. She is eager for everyone to get along, but hides her own personality behind a smile.
Lily - a smart, high-achieveing sixteen year old girl. She has no social life, spending all her time on homework, which is causing her to become depressed.
Gracie - a reserved, cautious, and kind sixteen year old girl who feels constrained by her mother’s expectations. She wants to be an artist, but her mom wants her to be a mathematician.
Jack - Jess’ younger brother. He is nine years old and in third grade. Generally in good spirits, though he doesn’t understand why his mother is so absent.
Dylan - Bailey’s friend. He is sweet and supportive. Ryan does not like him.
Ryan - Bailey’s boyfriend. He is manipulative and toxic, which Bailey does not notice.
John - Lily’s dad. He is not around much and pressures her to get good grades.
Diana - Lily’s divorced, single mother. Concerned for Lily’s well-being, but doesn’t know how to best approach the situation.
Jeanne - Jess’ mom. Always at work supporting the family after her husband's absence.
Jessica - Gracie’s mom. She dreams of her daughter becoming a mathematician just like she was in order to fulfill her long-lost dreams.
Dr. Green - the biology teacher who groups the four girls for a presentation
Rose - A friend of Ryan’s in freshman year.
