MISSION:
New Musical Project discovers and shares new works by underrepresented composers, gives student & community actors stage experience with new material, and expands the musical theater repertoire of the audience.
New Musical Project
was created in 2022 to help emerging and underrepresented musical theatre writers bridge the gap from page to stage.
This summer festival mounts a showcase of 30-minute segments from three brand new musicals, utilizing pre-professional/community actors from Boulder and beyond, in addition to a professional directing team, crew, and a live band.
Writers submit their work between 9/1-12/1; three musicals are chosen for the mainstage festival—two performances featuring songs and scenes from each of the three chosen musicals. New in 2025, the Saturday evening performance features a cabaret of songs from other shows selected as finalists.
New Musical Project is unique in that the 6-10 finalists are each awarded $100 in addition to being included in the cabaret. We recognize that creating musicals takes a massive amount of time, creativity, and capital. We want to help support writers as they take on the costs of demos, application fees, and all the other financial needs of a musical.
We also award our three winners a stipend to travel to Boulder to see their works come to life. Writers and composers dialogue with their cast and crew. While this project is not a “workshop,” it is invaluable for writing teams to see what happens when their work is taken on by a director and company.
New Musical Project is housed within Parlando School of Musical Arts.
